“To secure this harmonious relation [with the Formless Substance] is a matter of such primary and vital importance that I shall give some space to its discussion here, and give you instructions which, if you will follow them, will be certain to bring you into perfect unity of mind with God.
“The whole process of mental adjustment and atonement can be summed up in one word, gratitude.” — Chapter 7 – Gratitude
I had to use the study guide contained in Tony Mase’s pdf version of “The Science of Getting Rich” this morning.
One of the things that he (Tony) suggests (which is a good idea no matter what you are studying) is to always look up words that you don’t understand. While using context to determine a word’s meaning is an excellent exercise in comprehension, when we are dealing with a text from nearly a hundred years ago, it really does pay to look stuff up.
And because we are working with an older text, changes in language can cause misconceptions, so it’s also good to check dictionaries from the time of the writing to be sure that we are getting Wattles’ meaning.
This morning, I looked up “atonement.” I used OneLook Dictionary Search, selecting the “search all dictionaries” option.
Which brought me to the following definition from Webster’s 1913 dictionary:
Literally, a setting at one.
Reconciliation; restoration of friendly relations; agreement; concord.
I had to do this because, due to my traditional Christian upbringing, atonement to me means “what Christ did on the cross.” But while studying this book, we need to be clear on what Wattles meant by the word.
And it seems to me that what he means here is that gratitude is the best way to bring us into alignment, or into a friendly relation, with the Formless Substance.
The good news about this?
An attitude of gratitude is free to everyone.

“at-one-ment” is a great realization. It’s wonderful to see someone talking about formless substance! With gratitude…
